Program Note
Writer and director Newton I. Aduaka turns the camera on the timely and tragic reality of child soldiering in his latest film, Ezra. Seven-year-old Ezra is kidnapped by rebel forces on his way to school on morning and transformed into a soldier. Years later, he is among the witnesses at a Truth and Reconciliation Commission hearing investigating a brutal assault on his home village. When his sister, Onitcha, is also called as a witness, the corruption, denial, and raw emotions surrounding the event turn the hearing into a trial. But in exposing the secrets and lies, the hearing also lays the groundwork for healing when the truth is exposed and embraced. With an excess of a quarter million child soldiers fighting across the globe, Ezra is powerful, harrowing, violent, and all too relevant.
