Program Note
Bob is an intellectual film critic visiting an obscure festival in Kiev. While there, he meets the friendly Duska. Believing he’ll never take him up on the offer, Bob leaves Duska with an open invitation to visit him in Holland. Much to Bob’s amazement, Duska appears on his doorstep one day. Surprise turns to irritation when Duska’s days stretch into weeks and then months. Even more difficult is the strain the lack of a common language puts on the pair, and the stress it causes with Bob’s muse, the cashier at a local theater. Bob’s nerves become so frayed that he declares war against Duska, and succeeds in driving him away. But, oddly, Bob finds that he grows to miss Duska ? his only real friend ? and heads to Kiev to find him. Duska is a dark comedy about friendship and loyalty that is found in the oddest of places.
