Program Note
Following the failure of his last film, Claude Lelouch directed and presented his latest to Cannes under a pseudonym. His desire for anonymity is reflected in Crossed Tracks, where characters are on the run, betrayals come fast and furious, and in Lelouch’s words, a “man who wants to become someone else, someone who wants to disappear.” At the film’s outset, Judith Ralitzer, writer and femme fatale, is being interrogated by police, a serial killer known as The Magician has just escaped custody, and a hairdresser is approached by a man at a gas station that may be The Magician. At this point, Crossed Tracks jumps back and forth in time and between characters to keep viewers joyfully off balance. Intricate plot layers are revealed one at a time, eventually revealing the ironic and curious ways we are all connected.
