Program Note
Eating disorders have made headlines in the last year, with a renewed interest turned toward body image and health. The four characters that struggle with food in Bad Habits each have a distinct motive driving them. Matilde is a nun convinced the next great flood can be averted by her fasting. Elena is an extremely thin beauty ashamed of her pudgy daughter Linda’s extra weight ? and she is determined to ensure Linda looks her best for her first communion. Linda, being tutored by Matilde, wants nothing to do with it. And Gustavo seeks soft comfort in the arms of student who has no fear of eating and shares his taste for indulgence. Bross illustrates the perils of excess ? too much or too little ? in modern daily life, and brings a near religiosity to the motivations of each vivid character.
