Program Note
Winner of the East of the West Competition at Karlovy Vary International Film Festival in 2007, Armin is a traditional father-son story that unfolds within the hope of movie stardom and a better life. When a German film company sets up auditions to cast a boy in a film about the war in Bosnia, Ibro takes his 14-year-old son Armin to Zagreb in order to help him fulfill his dream. The dynamic between the hardened Ibro and the innocent Armin is at the root of their relationship, with the occasionally embarrassing Ibro merely wanting all the best for his son. Their miscommunication and unspoken assumptions provide as much information about the post-war family as their words do. Ognjen Svilicic creates a mood of sadness and confusion laced with comedy that inspires empathy with the pair, struggling with its place in the New Europe.
