Program Note
“The girl, Konstantin’s girlfriend… became more and more important, because it is apparently impossible to do without hope. I just let her speak [because] I believe that in our society people come about through others. We come about through the mirror of the Other, and depending on who this is we become beautiful or ugly. We rely on this Other, we depend on his gaze, her hand.” ?Angela Schanelec
Director Schanelec revisits the characters of Anton Chekhov’s classic drama, The Seagull to delve further into the existential dramas, lingering guilt and apathy of the family. A long absence punctuates the reunion between Irene, Konstantin, and Agnes, causing the realization that time has changed everything and given rise to doubts and confusion. Unable to recapture the past, the characters come to a painful understanding of their relationship.
