Set during Bucharest’s ironically named Golden Years, 4 Months, 3 Weeks & 2 Days is the first in a series of films to explore the history of communism in Romania without referencing communism directly. Otilia and Gabita are two school friends on a quest to get a late-period illegal abortion for Gabita. The compromises, negotiations, secrets, and lies that needed to be performed and kept during the last years of the Ceausescu regime, however, create most of the drama. Director Mungiu’s latest film will likely draw comparisons with Vera Drake due to the subject matter, but like that film, Mungiu is interested less in the abortion at the root of the narrative than in the kind of world that, at the time, brought the women to where they are ? and what impact it may ultimately have.
