Program Note
A girl with sadness and pain on her face is working in a desolate village. A funeral procession is passing her by, and an old man indifferently plays the flute day or night. And an endless pile of dead men and women on the grounds fill the screen. Director Jano Rosebiani, by constantly repeating such imagery, clearly shows the tragedy of the Kurds living within Iraq. The devastating aftermath of Saadam Hussein’s biochemical warfare has created a proliferation of hitherto unknown diseases, and Halabja village in Kurdistan has fallen victim; the camera depicts the endless mass of deformed children and disabled persons. However, even in such a wretched place, with the completion of an orphanage and the first wedding in quite some time, a glimpse of hope can be seen. And the last sequence, in which a newborn’s healthy scream is heard, contrasts with the first sequence of violent death, thereby suggesting the strength and life force of the Kurds. (Kim Sun-yup)
