Program Note
An anarchic comedy in colour and ‘Scope about three students’ (the tallest one played by Kato Kazuhiko, founder/leader of the Sadistic Mika Band) who emerge from a swim in the sea to find that their clothes have been stolen from the beach. A tobacconist reports them to the police as suspected illegal immigrants from Korea, and they have to go on the run. But their clothes were stolen by actual illegal immigrants from Korea(fleeing from military service in Vietnam), who now want the identities that went with the clothes... and are ready to kill to get them. Just after the deaths of our ‘heroes’, Oshima inserts a vox-pop montage in which passers-by on a Tokyo street are asked about their attitudes to Koreans. Curiously, all of them claim to be Korean. Even more curiously, two of them are Yu-Do-yun(the lead actor in Death By Hanging) and Nagisa Oshima himself. Fortunately for all concerned, the film then begins again. (Tony Rayns)
