Program Note
Rumpoey, daughter of the town’s richest and most powerful man, and Dum, a son of a poor farmer, reunite in the city years after having been apart as children. They are madly in love but the plot takes a tragic turn when Dum’s father is murdered by a government official and Dum swears vengeance. Dum joins a group of radicals and soon becomes the infamous ‘Black Tiger’. A story of tragic love and revenge, [Tears of the Black Tiger] is a melodrama with the mise-en-scene of a Western. Flashy colors, exaggerated acting, outrageous costumes, and surrealistic sets transform this film into a riot of competing styles and signs. This is the debut work by Wisit Sasanatieng, a leading artist of Thai New Wave. (CHO Young-jung)
