Program Note
Those who live a life of loneliness often do not know a way to escape their solitude. Loneliness becomes such vital parts of their beings that the only way to escape it is to stop breathing. Completely devoid of any passion, they continue to live their tepid lives. Love at 7-11 is a film about such lonely people. Tsai, an artist who works at night, always drops by 7-11 in the morning to buy a carton of milk. Although the clerk Feng is interested in Tsai, she does nothing about it. An anti-Japanese college student suddenly finds himself drawn to a Japanese girl he meets in language class. Added to the mix are Geisha Kikuliu, who appears in Tsai’s documentary, and Feng’s old lover who has just been released from prison. All are clumsy when it comes to sharing their feelings. In Love at 7-11, there are no dramatic incidents, rather, the camera depicts their daily lives from a distance. Love at 7-11 is a modern film about the lives of the modern Taiwanese. (Kang So-won)
