Program Note
In Australia`s far north almost a millennia ago, Dayindi covets his older brother Minygululu`s third wife. Minygululu decides to tell him an ancient myth to help set him on the right path. The story he tells, told in vivid flashback, is about a young man who also desires his brother`s wife that ends in revenge gone wrong. Though notable for its entirely Aboriginal cast and largely Ganalbingu dialogue, de Heer steers clear of the hot-button topic of race relations and tells a rich tale that touches on the universal issues of desire, conflict and resolution. As humorous and emotionally dense as de Heer`s [The Tracker] was intense, [Ten Canoes] is a beautiful and rewarding film about acceptance and reconciliation.
