Program Note
Another comedy from director Sabu, The Blessing Bell follows the trail of a man who may be the luckiest unlucky person. The factory shutdown leaves Igarashi jobless on his first day of work. As he aimlessly trudges along the road, he encounters a man whom he engages in conversation. Unfortunately, the man drops dead and Igarashi is arrested as a murder suspect. In prison, Igarashi meets another who speaks to his dead wife. The Blessing Bell presents a series of chance meetings and coincidences. And through the humor and tragedies that stem from the unpredictable, the director seems to be stating that life is a continuum of coincidences. Meanwhile, there seems to be no end to Igarashi’s adventures: saving a little girl from a smoldering building, seeing despair in a woman’s eyes, and on another occasion, getting into a car accident. But throughout every incident Igarashi maintains a deadpan expression. And the irony of the main character’s indifference as he faces these unexpected events seems to suggest Sabu’s view of looking at life with humor and wry observation (Lee Sang-yong)
