Program Note
A collection of 6 short films from assorted directors from South East Asia. Aditya Assarat‘s Now Now Now tells the story of two cousins, one Thai, one Chinese, and their reunion in Bangkok after not seeing each other for many years. Royston Tan′s Pohpiah follows one Singaporean family′s annual tradition of getting together and making Pohpiah. Midi Z′s Burial Clothes sees a young woman traveling back to her village in Myanmar to attend to her grandfather′s funeral. Sun Koh′s New New Panda portrays a Singaporean radio performer′s redundancy as his company is bought over by a Chinese corporation. Tan Chui Mui′s A Night in Malacca imagines a conversation between herself and a ghost of the past, referring to the travelogue of Chinese writer Yu Dafu, who wandered through Malacca in 1942. Finally, Tsai Ming-Liang′s Walking on Water sees him returning to his hometown of Kuching in Malaysia to ruminate on a place in decay that still holds a special place in his heart.

Aditya ASSARAT
Aditya Assarat studied film at the University of Southern California. In 2006 he started the company Pop Pictures to produce his debut feature Wonderful Town with funding from Sundance and Rolex. It won the New Currents Award at Pusan. In 2010, he directed his second feature Hi-So which screened at Berlin, Tokyo, and Busan. His most recent film is 6 to 6(2011).

Midi Z was born in 1982 and raised in Myanmar, but trained as an artist in Taiwan. In 2009, he was selected to be the leading screenwriter and director in the Taipei Golden Horse Film Academy organized by Hou Hsiao-hsien. In 2011, he made his first feature film Return to Burma.

Sun KOH
Sun KOH is the 3rd and illegal offspring of a family of Teochew cooks during an era of Singapore’s two-child policy. After 3 years of working for TVC directors from the Asian Pacific region, KOH made her debut short film The Secret Heaven in 2002. Her films include The Secret Heaven (short, 2002), Dirty Bitch (2009).

Born in 1976, Roystan TAN is a Singaporean filmmaker.and graduate from Temasek Polytechnic, where he studied Visual Communications. He first came to prominence through his short films: Sons (2000), Hock Hiap Leong (2001), 48 on AIDS (2002) and Mother (2002). He has so far directed four features; 15 (2003) 4:30 (2006) 881 (2007) 12 Lotus (2008)

Chui Mui TAN
Malaysian filmmaker TAN Chui Mui was born in Kuantan, 1978. In 2007, she received the Tiger Award at Rotterdam with her debut feature Love Conquers All. In 2010 she relocated to Beijing, after her second feature film Year Without A Summer. Her films include Love Conquers All (2007), Year Without A Summer (2010).

TSAI Ming-liang’′s film honours include a Golden Lion (best picture) for Vive L′Amour at the Venice Film Festival in 1994; the Silver Bear - Special Jury Prize for The River at Berlin in 1997 and the Silver Bear for Outstanding Artistic Achievement for The Wayward Cloud at Berlin in 2005.
