Arne’s Legacy tells the story of 16 year old Arne, whose father killed his entire family. Arne survives by accident. After staying with his grandmother for a time, he comes to live with his father’s best friend Harald and his family. The family consists of the parents, Herald and Elsa and three teenagers. The mature Hans, who is looking out for Arne, Wiebke, an attractive, cunning girl, whom Arne falls in love with and Lars, who is jealous of Arne and his new position in the family. Harald owns a rundown ship yard. Arne, who studies Finnish becomes friends with the mysterious Finnish foreman Kalluk. Arne tries to come to terms with his fate. His friendship with Kalluk and his infatuation for Wiebke give him hope. For a while, it looks like Arne will be able to overcome his grief. But the tragic fate is waiting for him.
