Program Note
Awarded Best Director at the Cannes Film Festival 1970, John Boorman’s early masterpiece is a fascinating allegory of class and racial tension. Marcello Mastroianni plays a bored and exiled monarch living in a run-down London mansion, an idealistic dreamer who gradually becomes involved with his impoverished black neighbors leading to an explosive confrontation. A highly stylised art design, experimental soundtrack and a stunning performance by Mastroianni, this rare festival screening will provide an opportunity to see one of the key films from the 1970s.
