Program Note
Brought up by convent nuns and about to take her religious vows, Anna goes to see her only living relative Aunt Wanda. Her aunt reveals Anna is Jewish and her real name is “Ida”. Both women start a journey to uncover their family story and find out who they really are.
Beginning with the first scene of nuns painting a statue of Jesus, this outstandingly composed film brings a very aesthetic experience with stunning visual images in each shot, as if presenting a flow of beautiful still pictures. The location of the main character in the frame is off-center even in closeups. Likewise, in two-shots the characters take only a certain part of the frame. This contradicts standard beliefs about screen composition and is also linked to the faltering lives of the characters.
Similar to the road movie genre, this film’s two women characters show a stark contrast. But when their independent journeys combine into one, the ripple effect becomes gigantic enough to overturn their destiny. The last shot involving Ida brings a question about something beyond religion and love. (RHEE Soue-won)
