Program Note
In 1947, a Sikhs’ village in the Punjab on the India-Pakistan border is dreary, because of the partition-independence issue. Umber, a Sikh, flees to southern part of India, leaving his family’s traditional home. When Kanwar, his fourth daughter was born, Umber couldn’t help but despair. He begins to raise her as a boy, hiding her sexual identity. In the course of pushing Kanwar to marry Neeli, Umber commits an irrevocable mistake. Director Anup Singh created this autobiographical movie out of his own experience, and life as he grew up in a Sikhs’ village in the Punjab. This film depicts the distorted desires of a householder who lost everything due to the conflict over India-Pakistan border, and presents various perspectives including historical, feminist, and ethnic outlooks. When the already-dead Umber returns as a spirit and tries to fight against the huge waves of nature, this film transforms into a fable, symbolizing the harsh human history. Irrfan Khan, who acted as the grown up ‘Pi’, in Life of Pi, blows life into this movie with his outstanding performance. (PARK Jinhee)
