Program Note
One-armed Swordsman is the monumental work and unprecedented box office hit that heralded the era of Chang Cheh. It is also a masterpiece and an exemplar of the Chang Cheh style. Chang rendered a tragic hero through a unique character, the unheard of “one-armed swordsman,” who is torn by fateful strife. Tsui Hark’s The Blade (1995) was a remake of, as well as an homage to, this film. Before he dies, Fang Kang’s father saves Qi Ru Feng’s life when he was trapped and facing imminent crisis. Qi Ru Feng accepts Fang Kang as a disciple, but because of fellow students’ jealousy-based bullying, Fang Kang cannot stand the harassment and is about to leave with the broken sword, his late father’s keepsake. But the only daughter of the master, whose adoration for him is unreciprocated, accidentally cuts his right-arm off, while trying to stop him from leaving. (PARK Sungho)
