An Ice Age once comes again to Earth. Everything freezes and the last human survivors get on a train. In time, the oppressed people living at the train’s tail rise in revolt and advance toward the front section. They eventually succeed to meet Mr. Wilford, the inventor of the train. But it takes more than that to make the revolt successful. As the frightful Mason (Tilda Swinton) says in the film’s beginning, the world order in Snowpiercer is clear. The front section and tail section is as clearly classified as the hats and shoes are for different use. In order to survive, people have to keep their places. Rebels are not forgiven. But the tail people cannot stand their miserable lives anymore. They stand up to change their living conditions, but they ironically discover greater gloomier realities in their revolt. The food they have been supplied was made of cockroaches. Recalling Eisenstein’s The Battleship Potemkin, riot surges and the leaders of rebels confront the ultimate authority at last. (NAM Dong-chul)
