Program Note
When his father dies, a film director returns to his rural hometown. There is quite a bit of commotion in the ensuing family reunion. While the funeral is held in the Confucian way, some relatives sing hymns, and his troublesome daughter starts to wail loudly. Farewell My Darling is Director Park Chulsoo’s pride project for independent films, motivated by watching how American independent films were made. It won the Best Artistic Contribution award in the Montreal World Film Festival. The director also captures both the tragedy and the comedy of Korean funerals. (NAM Dong-chul)
