Program Note
This rediscovery is one of Park Chul-soo’s early films, based on a novel by Lee Oi-soo. Two poor college students struggle to survive in an abandoned house. The man is absorbed with painting the image of 99 dogs on a canvas, while the woman tries to get food to eat. Pushed to their limits, their despair fills the house. The gloomy air of the times seeps into every corner of this film, beginning with the picture of a shot dog floating in the air. Taking into account that it was made during a military regime, the poor students running from reality and the stray dogs and lack of food paints a parallel picture of the era. (NAM Dong-chul)
