Program Note
The fourth film by Italian documentary auteur Gianfranco Rosi depicts the gigantic outer circular road of Rome, GRA, and the people around it, with a remarkably calm touch. The director shows the various human beings side by side, in parallel; the paramedic moving in an ambulance, a couple living in a camper, and the families residing in buildings by the road, amongst many others. Their routines flow by with daily conversation or sometimes depicted in silent, desolate landscapes. The director spent two years on the road, filming this documentary, in which the camera uncovers the hidden worlds, at the back of this winding roadway of constant turmoil: the elusive characters, fleeting apparitions and the possible futures. This excellent documentary won the Golden Lion at this year’s Venice Film Festival. (RHEE Soue-won)
