Program Note
Jerrold Tarog’s film is very sensuous. The third part of Tarog’s Camera Trilogy, If Only explores truths and lies surrounding one woman. While beautiful Andrea is busy with wedding preparations, the photographer starts to set up a camera. They exchange subtle eye contact. The man who came for a wedding photo shoot reminds her of her past. The sister going home to find Andrea’s shoes finds photos hidden in a box. The photos of Andrew and Andrea were taken in the distant past when they shared true love. The man coming for the wedding photo shoot is Andrew’s brother. On the rooftop of the hotel, Andrea starts a conversation with him. It is a universal story that a woman before her wedding overcomes the wounds of love and grows mature. Sensuous scenes often intefere with an audience’s ability to accept a film’s universal themes. However, describing a woman’s chronicle in a sensuous manner, Tarog doesn’t fail to show that through the process of facing her past she grows mature. The balance of these contradictions maintains the tension in this film. (Lee Sangyoung)
