Program Note
The film starts by showing a woman standing at a port. Then two inmates are pulled from their cells for a crime scene investigation with the policeman in charge. The film progresses, flashing backwards and forwards between past and present from when Joline and Piet first met, fell in love, and committed murder.
The second feature film by the talented director from South Africa, Andrew Worsdale, is a road movie depicting the fatal love between a gangster and a prostitute. The plot is outstandingly well constructed with the two accused and the police captain as the main characters. Their first encounter, love, and several months’ travel-or getaway-are delivered in an assured road movie format. Reflections on the couple’s relationship are expressed by an homage to the first sequence of Le Mepris(Contempt), and the couple’s threatened love and crime-smeared journey reminds us of Bonnie and Clyde. The final reversal makes their love story without a breakthrough more shockingly tragic.(RHEE Soue-won)
