On the border between Israeli Jaffa and Bat Yam, exists a community of Jewish and Arab outsiders. A reporter arrives at the place where Siam Hasan used to live, doing interviews with the people in the community. The true meaning of universality can be found, mirrored in the characters’ dreams, hopes and disillusion, shared in peaceful coexistence through the interviews. Israeli master Amos Gitai’s new feature is an outstanding film characterized by formal experimentation found in shooting around 80-minute move in a single take. “Ana Arabia” is another name given to a woman called Siam Hasan who never appears actually in the film. A reporter does interviews in order to write an article on this woman and as the audience follows the reporter, they find out about the woman who was born into Judaism and converted to Islam. As the interviews go on, not only the woman herself but much of her complicated family history is revealed. The director makes a plea to universal humanity by depicting a woman who was loved by everyone as “Ana Arabia,” reconciling religious differences. In short, this is an anthem of love that transcends everything. (RHEE Soue-won)
