Program Note
A man returns from an overseas business trip to an empty apartment and finds his wife is missing. As he searches for her, the man plunges into a nightmarish world of brutality and an atmosphere of oppression that he may not be able to escape.
After grabbing widespread acclaim for their previous film, Amer, the directors now turn to keeping audiences on the edge of their seats with this neo-giallo film. The protagonist that turns himself into an amateur detective, the mysterious killer who slashes his victims, organic buildings hiding secret stories and passages and a raft of extreme close-up shots remind us of the giallo masters, including Mario Bava and Dario Argento. But this film’s two directors display their unique talents by creating a disruptive world produced by the repetition of duplication, piercing and creepy sound effects and a twisted sensuality that runs through the film. The detective and landlord in the film are also the protagonist’s avatars, and the mysterious woman named Laura is represented with several faces. The enigma to be solved by the audience doubles the lethal charm of this film. (RHEE Soue-won)
