In Gda?sk in 1981, an influential Italian reporter pays a visit to Lech Wał?sa, the Polish Solidarity movement leader, for an interview . Through the interview the film relates the struggles and life of the contemporary Polish political hero, coming and going, backwards and forwards. Wał?sa’s life of extremes is tracked from the 1970s, when Communist authorities bloodily suppressed workers’ rights, to the Polish parliamentary elections of 1990. This new work of world-class maestro Andrzej Wajda has made the political life of the second president of Poland, Lech Wał?sa, its material. At the end of the 1970s when Poland was under Soviet rule, when strikes erupted at shipyards due to rising prices, Wał?sa’s struggle against the government, the resulting legalization for the establishment of Solidarity, and winning of the Nobel Peace Prize in 1983 are shown along with real-life data screens. This might be a boring theme, but cheerful music flowing over the fierce demonstrations, and significant song lyrics help this film become judicious. (RHEE Soue-won)
