On their way to the wedding in Palermo by driving, two friends get lost. They reach deadend and encounter a family in a car. Neither driver is willing to give way to the other, and as day gives way to night, both abandon all rationality. In the opening scene, rolling sea waves, a ship on the sea and people in the ship are seen. A boy comes out of the sea and swims back into the water. In a neighboring cemetery, an old lady is walking around. Such positions of the characters reflect complicated family relationships for which the boy serves as the only link. Although it is not emphasized directly, the film’s main theme is the deep sorrow of a mother who has lost her daughter. The old lady only listens to her daughter’s son and such a trusting relationship is reflected by the boy’s persuasive power when the two cars confront each other on the lawless street of Castellana Bandiera. The director’s unique first feature describes the confrontation of the two cars as a duel in a Western film. Elena Cotta’s marvelous acting is more than notable, and the powerful last sequence lingers in the memory long after the film finishes. (RHEE Soue-won)
