Program Note
The film centers on the legendary actress Ruan Lingyu who killed herself in the 1930s. Besieds telling her life story, Stanley Kwan describes the social situation of the 1920s and 1930s during which Chinese cinema was divided between the left and the right, and the change in women′s social status by interviewing Maggie Cheung who plays Ruan in the film. Kwan mixes documentary and fiction and in this self-reflexive film.

Stanley Kwan
Stanley Kwan was born in Hong Kong in 1957. After studying in the Communications Department at Baptist College, he joined a television station as a trainee actor, but soon moved to the production training division. He worked with several young directors who went on to launch a ‘new wave’ in Hong Kong cinema. His first feature was [Women](1985). His 1991 film [Actress] won the Best Actress Prize at the Berlin Film Festival for Maggie Cheung.
