Program Note
Daniel, an undercover agent for the German intelligence services, kills two neo-Nazis in a doomed operation against right-wing terrorists. After telling his supervisor that he wants to quit, he is told to lay low for a while in Neukolln, Berlin’s infamous multi-ethnic area. His hiding spot turns out to be an empty and run-down flat, but for Daniel, this is a welcome change, as nothing here reminds him of his old life. While he lives a new and quiet life, he meets Turkish Arab second-hand shop owner Abbas and they become friends. On their way home from the Arabic wedding that Abbas invited Daniel to, they are stopped by the police patrol and have to present their identification papers. Daniel can go, but Abbas is arrested with no particular reason, and there is nothing Daniel can do but just watch. Realistic and witty, Berlin filmmaker Cuneyt Kaya shows the rapprochement of two worlds which seem violently opposed.
