Program Note
The story itself is not special, but as The X was specially made for screen X, it’s worth noting its photography, editing, and sound. Action scenes featuring gunfights, explosions, automobile chases and so on, utilize the off-screen space in screen X to enhance audience immersion. For the maximum benefit of screen X, the development team also made “sound X,” which delivers a certain sense of space. But screen X’s effects are not limited to action scenes. The X shows that screen X can be variously applied, through the scenes in which three characters are shown in three separate screens, or the flashlight throws light into the screen’s side. The X ’s director, Kim Jee-woon, said, “It can be readily used for explosions or fire scenes, but it will be also effective for horror movies with noise from the sides, or lyrical scenes like those of a sea.” Will screen X be introduced in feature films too? The X will be the touchstone for that. (NAM Dong-chul)
