Program Note
In the mid 1940s, the life of a Brahman widow was very difficult. This is the story of three such widows in an orthodox Brahmin family and the different ways each deals with social injustice based on their gender. Durga accepts all social customs and taboos and resigns herself to fate. Gosani tries to stand on her feet but unwittingly trusts the wrong man. Giribala, the youngest refuses to accept these unfair social norms, While Durga accepts the hardships of a widow′s life, she holds on to the one hope that she can one day perform final rites for her dead husband. But fate has misfortune in store for her and Durga loses all hope. Then the young Giribala believes a widows is a human being who has the right to decide how and where to live. If not, she must be able to decide how and where to die.

Santwana Bardoloi
A person of many outstanding talents, Santwana Bardoloi is both a highly acclaimed actress and a medical doctor. As an actress, Santwana Bardoloi has performed on stage, radio and television. Her first directorial fventure was a short tele-film Aranyak for Doordarshan Kendra, Guwahati. It was followed by Madhyavartini. Avakhyay, a documentary on AIDS awareness was received with much acclaim. The Flight is her first directorial feature project. Of the film she has said, "Human beings have different attitudes towards life. What is right for one can be very wrong for another. While a social injustice is accepted by one as just normal another would simply refuse to accept it."
