Program Note
The Catholic priest pierces the condoms to be sold, while the pharmacist substitutes contraception pills with vitamins to boost the birth rate. Unwanted pregnancies occur, bringing unwanted babies into the world, and the priest forces the resultant couples to marry, causing unforeseen results. The first sequence, showing a man surrounded by babies as lively music flows in the background, effectively declares that this is a comedy. Comedy can be the most critical genre. The film shows comedy’s merit with exemplary style as some aspects of the Catholic issues and the Croatian racism are caricatured while the theme music is repeated. Its purpose is to inspire hilarity and yet the film also raises serious questions about human nature. It also pleases the eyes with the stunning visual of the night scenes, so what else could be more desired? Presented at the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival, the film produced by Croatian director Vinko Bre?an, shows the quintessence of Balkan comedy, famous for its sexual jokes. (RHEE Soue-won)
