As descendants of Genghis Khan and the symbol of nomad culture who once ruled a great empire, how are these Mongolians living now? In a subdued voice, Season of the Horse witnesses the life of these Mongolian nomads who have no choice but to deal with the encroaching lifestyles of modern civilization. Wurgen makes a living by herding sheep handed down to him after many generations. However, the grasslands are slowly turning into desert land and because of the government′s policy to limit grazing land, he′s having difficulties getting by. Making a living by selling yoghurt near the newly constructed highway, Wurgen just loathes the state that he′s in. However, no matter how hard life is, he feels he cannot ever sell off his old horse that stood by him over the years. Season of the Horse is a most bitter drama of one man′s survival?a man who is deeply attached to the traditional way of living and who tries ever so hard not to give that up. When the accustomed lifestyle is thrown away, there is no meaning for him to stay alive. At the same time, this represents the crisis of cultural identity that most Mongolians are experiencing.
