Program Note
Described director Scherson as an urban fairy tale, Play proposes questions of identity, definition and place?and their relationships to each other. The central character is Cristina, a lonely nurse Santiago. She sees the space she inhabits as modest if not quite backwards as she wanders from one place the next, never quite rooting herself in one spot or to one person. The path her flirts with crossing Tristan′s, lonely unemployed man who sees the city as the height of modernity. Cristina able to define she doesn′t accept this definition as being her true identity. The aimless Tristan, conversely, has nothing to latch on to at all. He is actively searching, but she the one passively find. Santiago is as important a character as either Cristina Tristan, place where the native old world meets the imported new one, that Scherson sees requiring appropriate role for its inhabitants in life-long game.
