Fishing Luck is similar to the usual romance films but, at the same time, it holds a mood of romance that can′t be seen easily. The film is set on Lanyu Orchid Island where the beautiful scenery is overwhelmingly recreated, giving the false impression of watching an anthropological documentary. Behong, Jeddah, and Qingkuang are childhood friends who grew up on Lanyu Orchid Island which is famous for catching flying fish. One day, a Taipei lady named Jing comes to the island to investigate the extent of cell phone eavesdropping range. She accidentally loses her wallet and, in her distress, Behong lets her stay at his house. As time goes by, the two gradually become attracted to each other. When Jing finds out that her boyfriend is being unfaithful to her back in Taipei, she is disappointed. Jing throws away the ring she received from her boyfriend into the ocean. After retrieving her wallet, Jing is about to hurry back to Taipei when Behong asks her to choose between her two loves by giving her a hairpin that′s shaped like a flying fish and the ring that she threw into the ocean. The pleasant presentation of such a simple story isn′t at all surprising considering the director′s career in documentary filmmaking. (Kim Young-jin)
