Program Note
"The script looks to openly address the anguish contained within the sensation of uneasiness that exists when something that we aspire to is taken away; the sensation felt when things we yeamed for escape us, are unreachable. It also touches upon the subject of identity, which is a source of a great many problems for Peru."-Augusto Tamayo San Román
The 17th century in Peru was a defining time in the country′s history, as well as South America′s. The clash of cultures, blood, religions and politics created an environment of mercenary self determination that is filtered through this story of Jerónimo as he searches for proof of his legitimacy. A soldier and adventurer, Jerónimo returns to Peru to prove he is, in fact, the descendent of a great captain. He becomes involved with a nun, and the inflammatory relationship sends the two fleeing from their persecutors. Tamayo San Román encapsulates the relationship between the conquering Spanish and the native Indians in violent collision in this atmospheric period drama that bristling with authenticity.
