Ali is a single mother living with her 7-year-old blind son. Having discovered how they live in the rough on the streets, the authorities take them to Ali′s estranged father and make them live with him. What unspeakable story lies hidden between the two, who are meeting after such a long time? They seem hesitant to disclose the hidden truth and face up to it. Painstakingly, they slowly peel away the hard layers of their relationship that have been hurting each other time after time. Cages presents an aspect of suburban life in Singapore, which most foreigners consider to be completely clean and well-managed. In describing what the living realities and cultural identity of these people who accepted the successful aspects of the West are, the film doesn′t do it with haste. Observing each individual′s psychological trauma while depicting the unspoiled beauty of their lives, the film shows another side to Singapore films. It makes a conscious effort to touch on some sense of roots in their lives that seems distant from preserving any traditions being a multi race country.(Kim Young-jin)
