Program Note
"I′d like to think that my film Betelnut Bisnis is somehow different from mainstream offerings. I hope its sensitivities will contribute to a better understanding of what life is like for many Papua New Guineans living in the reality of today′s peri-urban situation."-Chris Owen The Kaima family ekes out a meagre living in the highlands of Papua New Guinea selling betelnut for cash. Betelnut is one of the most widely used narcotics in the world-and one that is socially acceptable in Papua New Guinea. With few options left to them, the Kaimas are just one of many families without land or regular jobs that survive selling the drug. Moving from the eastern highlands, the Kaimas follow the trail of the betelnut trade-chewing the nut along the way-as a means to provide what they need to live comfortable lives. This is their story. Far from being all doom and gloom, Betelnut Bisnis is teeming with humor, with the Kaima family maintaining its dignity, each member possessing an inspiring, quiet determination to get on with their lives.
