Program Note
Spanning continents, Thom Fitzgerald directs a strong international cast in this epic film about people fighting an epidemic. In Canada, cut-rate porn actor Denys repeatedly fakes his blood tests by using the blood of his ailing father. When he gets caught, his family is thrown into chaos and his mother comes up with a dramatic escape plan. In China a travelling blood collection van is cause for celebration. As a paid service, the villagers rejoice at the prospect of earning cash. Sam is barred from giving blood due to a flu, so he makes his daughter sell hers in his place. The money she raises helps the family farm prosper, but when harvest time comes, his wife and daughter are dead, the village is overrun by disease and the blood van is gone. And in South Africa, Clara is a young missionary trying to convert the suffering Pondo to Jesus. Making the mistake of becoming involved with the plight of a family of orphans, she makes a bargain with a wealthy Afrikaans landowner that could risk her own salvation.
