Program Note
Two friends drink at a café in the mountains on the 31st of December. The two were members of a band called The Magicians′. Jae-sung is the owner of the café and Myung-soo looks a white collar worker. They gather to remember Ja-eun, a member who killed herself three years ago, and wait for another member, Ha-young.
The space in the films of Song Il-gon is bathed with a mythical atmosphere. On the contrary, the characters are concretely pictured and full of vitality. The Magicians is a short piece of work which shows the full capability of Song Il-gon as a director. The structure of this film shows the present and past continuously in one shot without editing, and also the acting is outstanding. Song Il-gon is now making a 95-minute feature film including this short film, which is also composed of one shot without editing. (Huh Moon-yung)

SONG Il-gon
Born in Seoul in 1971, Song Il-Gon graduated from Seoul Institute of Art and continued his studies at Polish National Film School in Lodz. His short films, The Dream of the Clowns and Liver and Potato earned critical recognition. His latest short film, The Picnic(1999) won the Grand Jury Prize at Cannes. Flower Island is his debut feature film and won New Currents Award at PIFF in 2001. He also directed Spider Forest(2004) and Flag(2005).
