Program Note
A story of a man consumed by trauma. Bearing an eye scar stemming from an accident in his childhood, Richio suffers from the aftereffects. Dividing his time between DJing at a nightclub and working at a record shop, he looks completely normal, but he hides an enduring pain. This inner pain becomes harsher as he falls in love with Konomi, the younger sister of his ex-girlfriend Akemi, who′s died in a car accident. Will he and Konomi be forgiven by Akemi′s dead soul? As in his previous works such as Timeless Melody and Wave, director Okuhara Hiroshi explores communication between people isolated by mental and psychological pain, which is elaborated by the Konomi character. Her guilt over the death of her older sister is more covertly veiled than Richio′s, which is symbolized by his blue automobile in which the two ride along the seaside. Richio and Konomi seem representative of modern Japanese society: normal on the surface but harboring inner agonies that can never be exposed. (Kim Ji-seok)
