Before Born is the new film made by director Ming Zhang who won the New Currents Award at the Pusan International Film Festival for his film Rainclouds over Wushan. Arriving at Bei Hai to find a man named Li Chonggao, Huang Guangliang finds out that Li Chonggao had already gone off to another place. Instead, he encounters Yu Ran who is also looking for Li Chonggao. Huang Guangliang is curious to know about her relationship with Li Chonggao. Huang Guangliang goes in search for Li Chonggao along with Yu Ran and he carefully watches her in the process. Although it seems like Huang Guangliang is attracted to Yu Ran who seems to hold a secret, Yu Ran doesn′t ever accept his heart. Telling a story about men and woman who become mysteriously involved with one another during a journey in search for someone who disappeared, Before Born reminds one of Michelangelo Antonioni′s The Adventure, but it delves deeper inside the inner aspects of confused and desolate humans. A strong impression of lonely despair is made with Ming′s Zhang style of direction that makes even an ordinary scene of people having a conversation into a scene of alienation. (Kim Young-jin)
