Program Note
In Behind the Mosquito Net, Teguh Karya creates the story of tragic wedding. The main character taxi driver, frustrated by his parents-in-law constantly belittling him for his low salary and lack of house-even rented one. The taxi driver presents person that always being humiliated, always the scapegoat. The main characters Karya′s movies are unstable personalities because their lives are never ambient and barely relate to their environments. Karya imagines the wedding as metaphor for real life, which he always doubts. Both of the rendering of the fight between the marginalized, weak person and the bigger power have typical loose ends. As minority, Teguh Karya′s movement his own life was very narrow. That uncomfortable personal experience has been inserted into the film, and the taxi driver′s family has only narrow sort of happiness. They can feel freely happy only in their beds, and behind the mosquito net. (Slamet Raharjo)
