Program Note
The debut film by Amma Asante is an unblinking, disturbing and powerful look at contemporary race relations and hate crime. Set in the working class area of South Wales, the film begins with a vicious attack on a local man of Muslim Turkish ancestry and then chronicles the events leading up to that seemingly inexorable moment. Leigh-Anne is single teenaged mother struggling to raise her daughter in the face of poverty, surrounded by a clutch of friends. The boredom, frustration, anger and misdirected paranoia felt by modern people outside of London people separated from multi-cultural Britain and unwilling or unable to understand it-leads to a violent act that only serves to seal their tragic fates. Without overtly sympathizing with Leigh Anne′s behavior, Asante tries to understand where it comes from. By setting the story outside London, Asante makes the point that issues of race and immigration are more relevant than ever. particularly for a generation that is neither one nor the other; fitting neither here nor there. A social realist drama reminiscent of Ken Loach.
