Program Note
Greenaway′s The Tulse Luper Suitcases trilogy ranks as possibly his most bizarre, inaccessible and vain works of cinema. They can also be called brilliant and iconoclastic. The multi-media, multi-visual films have inspired awe and scorn in equal measure. Lee Marshall in Screendaily referred to the second instalment, Vaux to the Sea, as "gloriously megalomaniac" and "ravishingly weird." Greenaway himself credits many of Tulse Luper′s antecedents to many of his early films, some even pre-dating The Draughtsman′s Contract. Tulse Luper is a writer and journeyman that collects and fills 92 suitcases with artifacts between 1928 and 1989 and the films tell the story of how he got them. Now, Greenaway has cut together the original trilogy into a single feature film-effectively creating a new film altogether and hence, a tetralogy. More quickly paced, less dense and lighter than the originals, A Life in Suitcases contains a great deal of footage not included in the trilogy, and is reason enough to experience Greenaway′s re-imagining of his most innovative work.
