Program Note
A violent act of savagery is at the heart of this film. In the town of Blighty, three young men, Robert, Joe and Ben, carry out their days in the lead-up to the invasion of Iraq-the film′s dominant motif-in a haze of boredom and middle-class smugness. When Joe′s cousin Larry arrives in town fresh out of prison, events snowball toward an event so shocking that we can′t help but feel challenged by our collective moral and political complacency. As director Thomas Clay suggests, "what we have been watching are the formative experiences of the boy Robert Carmichael, and, finally, he acts. Despite first appearance, his act is not one of rebellion or transgression but rather the purest primal expression of the society in which he lives. His actions speak for us, our drive for success, wealth, sex, power, our selfishness, one-upmanship, our murderous economics, our mock-concern, the lack of God, the lack of meaning, the lack of foresight for the future." These are what give rise to our deepest fears, and which inform this impressive debut film.
