Program Note
Rainbow Trout is a drama of brutality, where an everyday moment turns into a bloodbath. Two incidents constitute such change. The main incident comprises a visit by Min-Su and company to a trout farm run by their friend Chang-Hyun, and an accident which brings Tae-Ju, a farm boy, to his death. Refusing to take the blame for the crime, the group hastily retreats from the mountains, only to find themselves the pray of a revived Tae-Ju, who wields a rifle, terrorizing the group until they beg for their lives. However, the essence of this film can be gleaned in several minute incidents all dealing with jealous relationships. We witness a glimpse of what might have been between Chang-Hyun and Min-Su′s wife Jung-Hwa, who happens to be his ex-girlfriend. In addition, a budding romance between her younger sister and Chang-Hyun creates a curious love triangle between them. Hunters from nearby constantly harass Min-Su′s group, displaying their violent nature. They speak to them on their own terms, yet the dysenteric nature of their expression becomes a tremendous threat to Min-Su′s group. After all, Rainbow Trout is a reflection on violence, not the process of turning into a savage as in Lord of Flies, but serving as an aid to realize the insignificant nature of civilization. The mass suicide of trout when startled is self-reflective of emasculate humans confined in civilization. Park Jong-Won aims to present a distorted portrait of mankind with his acute vision and this film is no exception as he bares our true nature. (Lee Sang-Yong)
