Program Note
Four short films, one short documentary and one animation are the parts that make up this film that gives a voice to Eastern Europe′s first post-communist generation. Filmmakers from Estonia, Bulgaria Romania, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Hungary and Serbia-Montenegro come together under the guidance of artistic director Nikolaj Nikitin to make known their views on technology, traditional values, ethnic and religious chasms, and much more and to serve notice that Eastern Europe is ready to be included in the EU and the world. A wedding party waits for some missing guests-the bride and groom-in The Ritual, a girl must give up her beloved pet turkey to ensure medical treatment for her mother in Turkey Girt, a suicide prevention worker and his sister meet after a long separation in Shortlasting Silence, a streetcar conductor takes over the car one day in Fabulous Vera; two schoolgirls divided by a river finally meet when a historic bridge is reopened in the documentary The Birthday, and the films are held together by the animated Gene+Ratio, a celebration of life.

Arsenijević was born in Belgrade, Serbia. His films include No. 6(1998), Outsider (1999), the documentaries Landscapes (2000) and Belgrade Sound (2001), and Torsion (2003).

Koseva hails from Sofia, Bulgaria and is a graduate of the National Academy of Theater and Film Art. Her filmography includes Cake (1997), The Three Sisters (1998), Execution (2000), and Veronyka′s Destiny (2002).

Kornél MUNDRUCZÓ
Kornél Mundruzcó was born in Budapest, Hungary and studied at the Hungarian Film Institute and was entered in Cannes’ residence program in 2003. He is also an actor, and has appeared in [Bianco] and [Lányok] among others. His filmography includes the short [Afta] (2000), the Silver Leopard winner [Pleasant Days] (2002), “Shortlasting Silence" in the [Lost and Found] omnibus, and [Johanna] (both 2005).

Cristian MUNGIU
One of the forerunners of Romanian cinema today, Cristian Mungiu was born in Iasi, Romania and was a student of English literature at the University of Iasi before studying film directing at the University of Film in Bucharest. He has worked as a teacher, journalist, and assistant director on international films that shot in Romania. His filmography includes [Occident] (2002) and the [Turkey Girl] segment of [Lost and Found] (2005). His Palme d’Or winning film, [4 Months, 3 Weeks & 2 Days] illustrates the absurdity of the communist-era Securitate in Bucharest.
